Mookkirattai is a small plant grows in road sides and wet lands during rainy season. Its roots are collected, dried well and ground into very fine powder. It is then filtered to make it free from unground roots. It is being used by our ancestors since ancient days. Its leaves can be used as a Spinach along with other kind of Green Spinaches.

It is called as Mookkirattai in Tamil, Red Hogweed or Spreading Hogweed in English, Gadahpurna or Punarnava in Hindi, Atakamamidi or Punarnava in Telugu, Talutama in Malayalam, Komme in Kannada. Its Botanical name is Boerhavia Diffusa.
